How We Curate
Our Expeditions

Built Around Africa's Natural Calendar

Our flagship 14-night expeditions are the crown jewel of our offerings — designed to showcase Africa's extraordinary diversity both above and below the surface. For those with specific seasonal goals or limited time, our 8-, 9-, 11-, and 12-night packages are crafted to fit seamlessly into this core journey, offering flexibility without sacrificing the magic of seasonal whale and shark sightings.

Two Spectacular Marine Experiences

Our coastline offers two spectacular marine experiences: humpback whale season and shark season. These seasons overlap slightly, creating unique opportunities during the transition months.

Peak Season

Whale Season

July to September

From July to September, humpback whales are at their peak presence. Mothers and calves linger in the warm waters before starting their migration south. By early October, whales begin heading back to the Southern Ocean — sightings are still possible, but the likelihood decreases as the month progresses.

Transition Months

Crossover Months

June & October

June and October are transition months, where whale activity may be tapering off or sharks just starting to arrive. These months carry some unpredictability — nature decides the timing. The beauty of these crossover periods is the chance to experience both whales and sharks. SDD tailors activities based on what the ocean is offering at that time.

Summer Season

Shark Season

November to May

As water temperatures rise, shark season begins in November and continues through to May. This is the prime time for encountering a variety of shark species in their natural habitat — tiger, bull, hammerhead, whale sharks, and more.

What to Expect by Season

Peak whale season (July–September) is slightly more expensive due to the high probability of whale encounters — both surface and diving.

Crossover months (June & October) are priced more flexibly because sightings can vary. Guests travelling in these months should focus on the chance of encountering both whales and sharks, understanding that migration patterns are beyond our control.
