iSimangaliso Wetland Park · KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa
Where the wetlands meet the Indian Ocean.
About this Destination
St Lucia is the base town for SDD's South African wildlife segment — a vibrant coastal settlement sitting at the mouth of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. True to its name, meaning 'miracle and wonder,' iSimangaliso is one of Africa's most outstanding wetland and coastal sites — encompassing coral reefs, unspoiled beaches, towering dunes, tranquil lakes, and vast reed and papyrus wetlands.
Guests arriving in St Lucia are treated to one of the expedition's most memorable evenings: a sunset hippo cruise along the St Lucia Estuary. Aboard an elegant double-decker boat, guests glide through the waterway encountering hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a dazzling variety of birdlife. If luck is on your side, hippos have been known to wander through town during the evening meal.
